Greetings Readers, I just wanted to let folks know that due to some extreme circumstances The Listening Post may be forced to “slow down”. My own personal life may be turning upside down (again) very soon. I am trying to do everything in my power to not let circumstances stop me from continuing to publish the Post on a regular basis, but it could happen.

So whats going on exactly? I’d rather not go into details but the basic story is, I may be forced to relocate on short notice. These next few weeks could be very nerve wracking and emotional for me, as I may have to uproot my entire life and move cross country for the second or third time in as many years.

So what happens to The Listening Post? Well the website will remain here and open; However, updates may become sparse. Regular readers may have noticed that there was no “Now Playing…” published yesterday as there should have been. I apologize for that, but unfortunately it may happen again. I do hope to get back on a regular schedule soon, but I really can’t say when. As of now, The “Now Playing” listings and most of the forthcoming news articles are “on hold”. As most of the regular readers know, The Listening Post is on Twitter and I will try to keep the twitter stream active during this down time.

Of course there are other folks here at the Post besides myself; including our newest reviewer, Ken Jarman, who contributed our first mini review! The rest of the Staff will continue to contribute reviews and thought provoking editorials when and where they can, but they lead pretty busy lives too, so I’m asking our readers to be very patient with us while things sort themselves out.

Please be patient, The Listening Post isn’t going anywhere if we can help it!

Night Terrors is an anthology horror series produced by Darker Projects. The website has a dark feel contributing to the nature of the stories released by Darker Projects. The website is also very easily navigated with productions listed on the left, and each individual episode listed on the title page from newest to oldest. Embedded on each page is also a playlist of episodes for those just beginning on a particular series. While this is a stand-alone story within the anthology collection of Night Terrors the world of Byron continues in The Byron Chronicles.

The voice actors did well in their parts even though Tom Davis is later replaced by David Ault in the continuing series. As with all episodes of Night Terrors, the host is voiced by Mark Bruzee as Harbinger. The music and his voice give a feel of a Tales from the Crypt type show, with the host introducing and closing out each episode. If you’ve listened to The Byron Chronicles, it will be interesting to note that the voice of Gabriel is none other than Laura Post, who is cast as Chris Sparrow in the continuing series. She does an awesome job of voice acting and playing the part that is assigned to her, as she does in the many different other shows that she has been involved with. The editing of both Ben Harmer and Laura Post is very well done, giving Laura’s voice and angelic quality and Ben’s voice a demonic one. The background noise of the episode gives the episode a nice feel with the lack of silence throughout the episode. Footsteps and rain are well done as well as background conversation in the bar scene.

Like most episodes of Night Terrors, the episode begins with a small clip, leaving the audience wondering how the story got to that point. A demon, named Morg, knocks down Byron’s door, stating that Morg’s master says “you come now.” Byron notes that the door was created for him by Merlin himself. He also narrates that the odd situation of a man walking next to a demon is unnoticed by the regular public due to the fact that humans have an inability to see the supernatural creatures for what they really are. The demon leads Byron to his master, the Devil, who is now beginning to call himself by the name of Logan. Logan informs Byron that he wishes him to find a woman by the name of Lilith who is allegedly the first one to escape from hell.

As Byron arrives back home, he is greeted by the angel known as Gabriel, who informs him that heaven is looking for Lilith as well, saying that she had walked out of heaven. At a bar known as Dante’s Inferno, Lilith tells Byron the truth of who she is. Byron then comes up with a way to keep Gabriel and Logan from obtaining Lilith, resulting in a stalemate. With Lilith locked in a cage that is unable to be penetrated by angel or demon kind, she no longer needs to worry about running from  the forces of heaven or hell, but is instead trapped with Byron. With events continuing in The Byron Chronicles, one can only wonder how long before the forces of heaven and hell will let Byron continue unchecked. n July 19th, The Listening Post asked a question, “Can Podcasting Speak For Audio Drama?” This is not a simple question to answer in that there are several different ways to look at the question. As for me, I can only offer my own anecdotal evidence and experience to this and say that it already is. But,that really isn’t the question that needs to be asked.

Podcasting is already “speaking” for Audio Drama. When I started listening to podcasts 5 years ago, it was mainly Podiobooks. The Podiobooks I was listening to at the time were mostly straight reads. I remember thinking that authors have so many more tools to use to tell a good story. (That was when I did 16 Pieces at a Time) So as I was working to fill my growing podcast listening habit I found the Sonic Society. Here is the limitation of radio, but also its strength. It is local. Jack Ward and the Sonic Society are based in Halifax, Canada. From where I live, I am not even sure how far away that is… but it was the Sonic Society that opened my eyes to the fact that Audio Drama is not dead. it was not local radio but podcasting which got that message to me I didn’t even know about BBC doing Audio Drama stories. (Hell I didn’t learn until early 2007 that Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy started as an Audio Drama). So really Podcasting is already working for Audio Drama.

So to me the real question becomes “Is Radio the Brass Ring for Audio Drama?” There is no doubt that as I write this, radio is a media giant that just won’t go away (or won’t for a long time yet) and radio has the huge audience. A huge audience is usually the ultimate goal of any content producer or should be, but this is not necessarily always the case. The goal of commercial radio is to make a profit. Making a profit is where Audio Drama companies struggle as much as radio stations. Although it is cheaper to produce an Audio Drama than it is to produce say a television show or movie, for Audio Drama to be profitable, the radio station it has to have an audience that wants to listen. The radio station can then sell advertising to sponsors and hopefully make a profit. For radio stations it is a business move that they play music (damn just lost Jack Ward here) the music segments  are relatively short thus allowing the station to sell more time for (dun dun DUN) Commercials. So from commercial radio’s point of view Audio Drama just doesn’t have the draw to be profitable for them. (This statement does not apply to community radio or the fine works of the Sonic Society or Radio Drama Revival)

All of that being said, radio has the audience that New Audio Drama producers want, however the challenge is to prove to a radio station that you can provide that audience for them. Which is what podcasting can do, but you must be patient and build your audience. The question you need to ask yourself is this… By the time you get an audience, will you really need to be on the radio? What are your thoughts?
