Status of The Listening Post

August 10, 2010

By Dex Trenchcoat

Greetings Readers, I just wanted to let folks know that due to some extreme circumstances The Listening Post may be forced to “slow down”. My own personal life may be turning upside down (again) very soon. I am trying to do everything in my power to not let circumstances stop me from continuing to publish the Post on a regular basis, but it could happen.

So whats going on exactly? I’d rather not go into details but the basic story is, I may be forced to relocate on short notice. These next few weeks could be very nerve wracking and emotional for me, as I may have to uproot my entire life and move cross country for the second or third time in as many years.

So what happens to The Listening Post? Well the website will remain here and open; However, updates may become sparse. Regular readers may have noticed that there was no “Now Playing…” published yesterday as there should have been. I apologize for that, but unfortunately it may happen again. I do hope to get back on a regular schedule soon, but I really can’t say when. As of now, The “Now Playing” listings and most of the forthcoming news articles are “on hold”. As most of the regular readers know, The Listening Post is on Twitter and I will try to keep the twitter stream active during this down time.

Of course there are other folks here at the Post besides myself; including our newest reviewer, Ken Jarman, who contributed our first mini review! The rest of the Staff will continue to contribute reviews and thought provoking editorials when and where they can, but they lead pretty busy lives too, so I’m asking our readers to be very patient with us while things sort themselves out.

Please be patient, The Listening Post isn’t going anywhere if we can help it!

The Listening Post STILL Needs …You!

For those who don’t know, My name is Dex and I am the intrepid Editor “runner-of-all-things” here at the Listening Post. Right now, the Post is a one man operation. However, I’ve always felt that more folks could contribute to this vision of a listener/fan based community that supports all the different groups and people involved in audio drama podcasting today. One of the easiest ways to contribute is to review current shows.

I put out a notice for reviewers about a month ago, since then I’ve had several great folks contact me about becoming reviewers and possibly more. While I eagerly await their contributions, I want… nay need, more folks involved! If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at blogging but didn’t want to bother with all the hassle of running a website, here’s your chance! While I would prefer regular contributors to the Post, I also welcome guest reviewers who have their own blogs/websites. The only “qualifications” you need are a love of Audio Drama and a willingness to write.

Perhaps you want to do something other than write reviews to contribute?… great! Tell me about your idea and lets see what we can do!

So what do you need to get started?

An Email account. Most folks already have one, but for those that don’t… try Google, Yahoo or Hotmail which are all free.

Skype – This probably the biggest voice chat/Instant Message provider out there, and their software is free – Download Skype HERE.

A WordPress.com username – Since the Post is hosted by wordpress.com, you’ll need a username.  Don’t worry its all free, Get it HERE.

I look forward to hearing from any willing participants out there…

A Work In Progress

Please pardon the dust and be sure to wear a hardhat, as I continue to build this site.

Currently in works:

Transferring all the Have You Heard reviews over here to their new home. Don’t worry my articles will still be viewable over at Suburban Conspiracy for as long as the site allows.

I am working on a logo (thanks to to some very generous help from a friend!) and possibly even changing the name of the site. Have no fear fans and friends, I am not going anywhere.  My web address will remain the same.

I am still looking into some plug-ins, etc for mp3’s so I can host  audio trailers for various shows.  The hope is that eventually I will have a “Promo of the Week” page. Whether it will actually update every week will of course depend upon availability and other factors.

I am also working on some ideas for increasing traffic to the site, but that will take time since I am learning as I go.

Come back in a couple of weeks, and you may be surprised at what you see…

A New Beginning…

Hello, my “pen” name is Dex. Roughly one year ago, I began writing audio drama reviews for a small independent web-zine called Suburban Conspiracy which (right now at least) is about whatever comes to our minds. Usually its things like gaming, comic books, anime or even our favorite recipes. What came to my mind was mostly audio dramas, which are more popularly known as radio dramas, even though they arn’t broadcast or produced on the radio anymore.

For that first year, we all wrote and posted our little hearts out. Along the way, our little website grew then shrank, and then grew again. At our one year anniversary, we decided that we needed to refocus and redesign the site. I hope to remain a part of “Sub Con” (as we affectionately call it) in whatever form it takes in the future, but with the major overhaul of the website, I now have an opportunity to do something I have wanted to do for a while… Strike out on my own with a website entirely devoted to modern audio drama.

So here I am, continuing my quest to bring “the latest and greatest” in audio drama to the masses. The focus will remain on modern audio drama actively being produced today. I may cover some of the classics of old time radio, but there’s a ton of new shows out there being made right now today, making audio drama a modern and active community of content creators and listeners. I’m here to let folks know that radio drama is far from dead, in fact it is being reborn right here on the internet and its all free.

In the near future I plan to focus and structure this website into a showcase of modern audio drama ranging from new “ear-opening” originals, to fan fiction.

Regular features will include “Coming Attractions…” a page dedicated completely to trailers and promos for new shows. So if your an audio producer send those promos in today!

The Reviews section will consist of an in-depth review of a single new show.  Most of these reviews will be from my column, “Have You Heard?…” over on Suburban Conspiracy. Things like audio quality, casting and a shows website will be discussed in depth.

In addition to reviews I hope to have “The Complete Morons Guide to Listening to Dramatic Podcasts“. This will be a discussion of the best equipment for listening, and troubleshooting guides, etc. Lots of Blogs and webpages cover how to produce audio drama, but how many recommend new shows and review those shows in-depth from a listeners point of view? This one will.

I hope you’ll join me.
